Using Meta Quest for hand positional tracking

This article explains how to configure Meta Quest controllers as trackers inside MANUS Core through SteamVR for hand positional tracking.

Currently MANUS glove devices are not compatible with standalone headsets like the Meta Quest when they're used in such a mode. When using a Meta Quest device to function as a PCVR (SteamVR) device it's possible to use them in our plugins with MANUS glove devices.

There are two common ways of setting up your Meta Quest for use in SteamVR. Via the SteamLink Meta Quest app managed by Valve, or the Meta managed Airlink method.

For both methods you'll need to have Steam and the SteamVR app installed on your PCVR system.

  1. Connect your Meta Quest headset to the same network as your PCVR system.
  2. Download and install the Steam Link app from the Meta Quest store in your headset. It's also possible to do this from the Meta Quest companion phone app.
  3. After installing the app, open it and follow the on-screen instructions for connecting your headset.
  4. Once you're inside the SteamVR environment, you're ready for the next step.
  1. Connect your Meta Quest headset to the same network as your PCVR system.
  2. Download and install the Oculus desktop app.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Inside the Meta Quest headset, select Quest Link from the settings panel.
  5. Launch Quest Link, if this does not appear enable Quest Link from the same menu.
  6. Enable Use Air Link.
  7. Select your PCVR system from the Available PCs list and select Pair.
  8. A pairing code will show in VR. Remove your headset and confirm that the code you see on your computer matches the one you see in your headset.
  9. Click Confirm from your desktop app. Then put your headset back on.
  10. Select Launch to begin using Air Link.
  11. On your PCVR machine start SteamVR, your headset should now boot into the SteamVR environment and you're ready for the next step.

Setting up tracking

Now continue on with the normal SteamVR tracking setup flow shown here. This will guide you through turning on the tracking system inside MANUS Core and continues on how to set up hand offset.

If you're using a controller and tracker combination that does not have a preset, please refer to our tracker offsets article for instructions on how to configure such a use case.
